Computer Related Newspaper Article Extra Credit
What type of
newspaper articles?
Computer related articles. Each week, look for a newspaper article concerning a
computer related topic. (Examples include: Privacy issues, Computer uses,
Computer viruses, Computer hackersÉ) The article must be larger than a couple
of paragraphs to qualify. It must have an author listed.
Can it be a
magazine article? No.
Can it be a
newspaper article retrieved from the WWW? Sure, only if: You include a printout of the [entire]
article found at a major daily (not weekly or monthly) newspaper site on the
Internet. Examples of acceptable sites include The Ann Arbor News, The Detroit
News, The Detroit Free Press, The New York Times, The London Daily Times, The
Baltimore Sun, to name a few. Internet sites must be daily major newspapers,
not weekly editions, not Excite news, not MSN news, not AOL news.
Point Value of the Extra Credit: 3 points each - You are LIMITED to one article per week and limited to 15 points total for this type of extra credit. So, you can do this 5 times for extra credit! This can be hand-written!
Notice - NO
CREDIT will be given if the assignment is incomplete. For example, you canŐt
turn in only one or two sentences and call it a paragraph or "forget"
one of the two paragraphs or "forget" the source information!
Due Date: These are due on the dates specified
below, at the beginning of class. I will NOT accept late Newspaper Articles!
(Ébecause, as the name implies, it is not a requirement. It is EXTRA CREDIT and
optional!)

A. Personal
information in MLA style:
In 4 lines at the
top-left corner of the page: First line: Include Your Name; Second line: Matt Evett; Third line: COSC 101 - Section ##; Fourth line: The date you are
remitting your paper in Day Month Year format as in 10 January 2005
B. Title,
centered.
C. 1st
complete paragraph:
Summarize the article. (paragraphs are at least three sentences)
D. 2nd
complete paragraph: Your
opinion of the content of the article. (What were your thoughts about the
article? For example: Are you for it or against it? Will this affect you? Do
you believe it? What can be done about it? Do you have any suggestions?)
E. Include ALL
of the Source Information
even if you attach the article! (This will be in MLA style) The Author's name
(last, first) Period (If the article is by an anonymous author, leave out the
name and begin the line with the article name in quotes). The name of the
article in quotes. The name of the newspaper, underlined. The date it appeared
in the newspaper, include a colon if from paper version or period if from
online. If it was taken from an online source, include the date you retrieved
it here. If it was taken from a paper newspaper, then include the section and
page number followed by a plus sign only if the article was continued on
another page. If it was taken from online, include the complete URL in <>
brackets. Must have all of this listed to qualify See examples of cited
