Homework M2 : Sketching 1. Suppose you run a charity like Nothing but Nets, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nothing_But_Nets which distributes mosquito-proof nets to people in malaria-prone regions. How would you decide how many nets to give to each country? * List some inputs and outputs, and * sketch some interesting relationships between them (on paper). Bring your sketches to class. It's hard to sketch graphs for inputs and outputs without defining what they are (inputs are often variables and parameters; outputs are almost always variables). And assumptions might tell you which graphs you can skip sketching. For example, if a particular parameter is assumed to be constant with respect to time, then you don't need to draw a graph of it as time changes. 2. Recall the Math Contest in Modeling problems that you were interested in, on the previous homework. Pick one of them. * List some inputs and outputs, and * sketch some interesting relationships between them.
